Piedmont Band-Aid – Lincoln, NE

The Piedmont retail area in Lincoln, NE is only a few miles away from the East Campus of Bryan Heath Center. As we can see in the pictures, it is not in a very good condition: many retail stores are closed and the layout of the buildings, in a L shape, releases the space in the middle of the site for the parking lot. Cars seem to be more relevant than people, what shouldn’t be the case within a hospital’s area of influence.

One of the main health problems of the American society is obesity. It affects both adults and teenagers, due to a bad diet and lack of exercise. The Piedmont area is chosen as the spot for regeneration: an organic market (with its own crops to provide the food) and an extension of the cancer center of the Bryan Heath Center should be located on the site. A hotel should also be designed to accommodate the relatives of the patients.

I though it was very important to divide the actual construction in different volumes to be able to place them around the site according to the use, the needs, the users… and to make sure the plot is more accessible to the pedestrians. Nature, crops and green areas, melts with buildings in the Piedmont proposal, leaving the Souther and Northern area to the cars, on different levels.

Some images of the project, where we can see how open to the public and nature would be, are:
