Juliao Sarmento’s Museum – Malaga, Spain

The Contemporary Museum of Malaga was exhibiting some of Juliao Sarmento’s most important works. Taking advantage of the possibility of getting to know his pieces first hand, it was required for our studio class to design a small expansion of the museum for tho particular exhibition. Juliao Sarmentos works are dual, always playing with the contrast between black and white.

The proposal needed to reflect that duality through space and light. I decided to locate the piece on the water, made out of containers to bring back the style of the port/market to the area as the building of the Contemporary Museum itself used to be a trade market.

The different heights, the completely opaque walls opposite the translucent, the inner patio, try to generate all that contrast so characteristic from Sarmento’s style in a simple space able to embrace art, visitors and the sea.
