Renewing the Guadalmedina – Malaga, Spain

The edges and the bed of the Guadalmedina river, that goes across the city of Malaga, from North to South, are in very bad conditions, as it usually carries no water and so, it is the forgotten part of the downtown area. The main problem is that it runs along the city center, so many pedestrians and tourist see it every day: it shows a very bad side of the city.

A whole renovation of its appearance is proposed, adapting its look to the neighborhood it is crossing. For example, in the northern area, the suburbs next to the mountains, the bed is transformed into a natural park, with different heights, trees and green areas, lakes… so that the environment is brought together with the housing gradually. The river itself is channeled underneath this renewed space, in case after heavy rains, it contains water again.

As we go south, around the residential area, a more urban park is located, to keep on with that progressive fusion between nature and buildings. We find in it some facilities such as sport courts or activities zones.

The souther part is nowadays used by teenagers as a meeting point, where they skate or play some other sport, football, basketball… without actually having courts or pitches… There was no need in interfering with this use, so the project just brings better conditions to the users.
