Co-working Art Laboratory – Malaga, Spain

The Andalucia Avenue is one of the main streets in the city of Málaga. There is usually a lot of traffic as it connects the downtown area with some of the highways to the East of the city. It is quite long and so its uses change from the East edge (commercial) to the West one (residential). We decided to do first a very detailed group study of the street according to traffic, uses, users…

From these diagrams one can understand that the street needs a proposal that can bring attention to it and connect the Western side of the city with the historical and commercial area, and so, it will have to be related to people and their interests. An artistic space dedicated to co-working and exhibition would be a good activity for the project because it would gather artists, professionals and visitors, making it easier for culture to be accesible to everyone.

For this project, the co-working is divided in two buildings, connected through the basement, so that there is a public space surrounding the construction that can be used also as a reunion zone for pedestrians and visitors. The buildings are understood as one big volume, where there is activity going on in three different levels.

In every level a different activity takes place, for example: on the ground floor the exhibition area is open to the public, there is a first level where the co-working sets are located, and a last one with individual offices for artist. All these rooms are opened to the common space so that the people, while visiting the exhibition, can see how artist work and how every piece is created.

The structure is very characteristic: the studios hang from some steel rails that allow them to be located in different parts of the building, depending on the project they’re working on, light, the exhibition… The co-working boxes are more opened than the individual studios because these last ones require a more private atmosphere.
