Bryan Health Center – Lincoln, NE

The East Campus of the Bryan Health Center is not capable of accommodating all the uses needed in the area, so they want to acquire some of the surrounding fields to build a cancer center, therapy center and some residential areas for patients and their relatives. The hospital is located in a housing area in Lincoln, Ne, and so it was necessary to study the type of population living in the nearby.

Most of the houses are occupied by families, as we see on the diagrams. To implement the new area, the actual campus needs to be reorganized so that the traffic doesn’t interfere with the pedestrian accessibility to the facilities. By simply changing the direccion of some of the lanes, we avoid traffic jams on the Northern entrace to Bryan Heath Center, what would simplify the conection between the hospital and the new centers. As we seen on the sections, what should be new parking lot areas are transformed into underground garajes to free green healing parks for patients among the residential areas.

The new therapy center is understood as two independent volumes, with two different uses, that are conected through the LINK, a transition-space, that is figuratively extended to the exterior of the building to be used as a ‘decoy’ for visitors. The volume to the left holds the REC center: with a basketball court, a running track on top of it, a gym, some paddle courts, bar… The voulme to the right is home to the physical therapy rooms, the cardio area and the water center with different pools.

As the BIM methode is already in use in the American Universities, the project was a collaboration with interior design students that would work on materials, cladding, furniture,… while we were working on structure, m.e.p. systems…
